Azure DVB-T/H Product Overview

Introduction

Ocean Blue Software provides Sunrise (a DVB-T software stack) and Azure (a DVB-H software stack). These stacks can be integrated to a single product, as some of the lower-level components can be shared between the stacks and a single user interface can present a unified view for the different services.

The application layer provides digital television services such as programme guide, favourites and parental control. It uses the DVB-T/H middleware for the actual functions and data.

DVB-T is specified over MPEG-2 transport streams (ISO/IEC 13818-1). DVB-H is specified over DVB-IPDC (IP Datacast) which provides an IP abstraction to the rest of the stack. As a result, many of the DVB-H components belong to the Internet Protocol Suite (e.g. ALC, FLUTE, RTP) and cannot be shared with the DVB-T middleware. However, as the IP packets are carried in an MPEG-2 transport stream, basic SI/PSI processing can be shared.

Other services, such as user interface components or database services are generic and can be used by the DVB-T/H components, or directly by the application.

In addition, both Sunrise and Azure use an OS and hardware abstraction layer, allowing them to be ported across hardware platforms and operating systems with minimum effort.

Figure 1 shows the various components in the application, middleware and abstraction layers.

About DVB-H

DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) is a set of specifications which bring broadcast services to handheld devices. These specifications include:

  • Transmission Systems for Handheld Terminals
  • IP Datacast over DVB-H: PSI/SI
  • IP Datacast over DVB-H: Electronic service guide
  • IP Datacast over DVB-H: Content delivery protocols

In addition, the DVB-H specifications make use of some Internet Protocols, such as ALC (Asynchronous Layered Coding), FLUTE (File Delivery over Unidirectional Transport) and RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol).

DVB-H is designed for mobile devices, supporting the following features:

  • Robustness: DVB-H includes multiple error detection and correction mechanisms to allow reception under less-than-ideal conditions.
  • Mobility: DVB-H specifies a method for broadcast handover (handoff) between cells, allowing seamless service presentation whilst on the move.
  • Battery Life: DVB-H services can be time-sliced, allowing the receiver to turn the tuner off between bursts, thus conserving batter power.
  • Azure DVB-H software product is designed to be robust, modular, compact and optimised for each hardware platform supported. read more...
